Jeppe Eli carried his mother’s father’s name. Jeppe Christensen was born in Lem, in Viborg, in June 1810, and stayed in Denmark; naming a son for him was how the family kept hold of a man they would never see again.

He died on 12 April 1865, three years and four months old.

His sister Julianne had died nine weeks earlier. Their mother buried two children between February and April of that year.
